One of most joyous events OMSA hosts is the annual Mom's Day Scholastic Awards Ceremony. This event celebrates the academic accomplishments of African-American, Latino/Latina, Native American, President's Award Program students and Educational Opportunities Program students.
Invitations are issued to students who qualify for this recognition by having recorded a GPA of at least 3.45 during either the previous Fall or Spring semester. Eligible students are encouraged to invite guests to this celebratory event, which includes a breakfast buffet, keynote speaker and the presentation of awards and certificates to the students in the presence of their families, friends, faculty and staff.
Two high-achieving students are selected to serve as the Mistress and Master of Ceremonies for the program, during which they share the emcee duties. The event also has traditionally been the forum for the announcement and presentation of certificates to the recipients of the Reginald and Frances Hayes H.O.P.E. Scholarship, established in 2000 in memory of her parents by Jacki Hayes, two-time alumna of the University of Illinois.
The event is held on Sunday morning during the Mom's Day Weekend festivities, a long-held tradition at Illinois that features numerous campus activities devoted to "Illini moms."
